The Polish Cultural Institute in New York presents
DIKANDA
USA TOUR
Friday, September 16, 2011 - Sunday, September 25, 2011
Chicago, Wood Dale, Madison, Minneapolis, Cedar Rapids, Bloomington, and New York
Having experienced the Polish group Dikanda live in concert, you are completely blown away. -- FolkWorld #38 Dikanda's repertoire includes popular folk music, Polish folk songs, Balkan tunes, Gypsy songs, and the group's own compositions which are also deeply rooted in the folk tradition of this part of Europe. The band stands out among similar groups with its unconventional tasteful and delicate interpretations. -- The Warsaw Voice, Igor Slavich Dikanda exert an unshakable fascination on their listeners. What they play, one senses, is genuine; every note comes from the heart and is offered with a deep-seated fervor. -- Schwarzwälder Bote, Michael Kienzler Impetuous rhythms, ethnic sounds, captivating music, Dikanda's concerts are a unique journey through the music of the world, a spontaneous meeting full of energy, charisma, genuine passion, joy and emotion for the audience. The group was founded in 1997 in Szczecin, Poland. Fascination with traditional music and hard work have allowed them to cultivate their own style and original sound. Their musical spaces emerge from what they call "Music of the Four Sides of the East." The artists seek their inspiration in the sounds of Poland, Belarus, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and in Jewish, Gypsy, and Kurdish melodies. They create a new langauge and meanings in composed songs, as well as in traditional folk songs. Dikanda released five albums, played hundreds of concerts, including in the Asiatic part of Russia, India as well as in most European countries, and their work has been awarded numerous prizes and distinctions. Dikanda is Ania Witczak - vocal, accordion, Kasia Dziubak - violin, vocal, Kasia Bogusz - vocal, Daniel Kaczmarczyk - percussion, Piotr Rejdak - guitar, and Grzegorz Kolbrecki - double bass. The tour is supported in part by the Polish Cultural Institute in New York. The concert at (Le) Poisson Rouge is presented in collaboration with the Polish Cultural Institute in New York.
