Jasmina Metwaly (b. 1982) is a painter and a multimedia artist oscillating between Poland and Egypt. She was born in Warsaw, completed an MA at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan in 2006, and received her Postgraduate Diploma at the Byam Shaw School of Art at Central Saint Martin's College of Arts and Design in London in 2009. She is the co-founder of 8784h project and XR Gallery in Lubon, Poland as well as a member of the social media collective Mosireen in Cairo, Egypt. Metwaly's work is time-based with strong correlations and cross-references to painting. Her work also challenges the language of documentary activism. Being culturally, mentally and geographically suspended between several locations her works contextualize the form in which the image occurs. During her residency at Art OMI she is exploring the duality of spaces she finds herself in: the studio (IN) and painting and video work (OUT). Most recently she has exhibited her work at 7th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, Ai Wei Wei Gallery (International Film Festival in Rotterdam), Cairo Documenta, CASZuidas, Amsterdam, Open Gallery in London, Berlinale Film Festival, Townhouse Gallery, Cairo, Studio BWA in Wroclaw and Contemporary Image Collective (CIC) in Cairo. She has received several awards and grants including The Open Prize (Open Gallery, London) for her video Crucifixion and AFAC (The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture), Crossroads grant for In/ Out in the Streets. OMI INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS RESIDENCYinvites visual artists from every continent, representing a wide diversity of artistic styles, to gather in rural New York State to experiment, collaborate and share ideas. During three weeks each July, concentrated time for creative work is balanced with the stimulation of cultural exchange and critical appraisal. Each session, a distinguished critic/curator is invited to participate as Critic-in-Residence, currently curator and critic and Art Editor at Lodge, and Bomb Magazine, Saul Ostrow, who leads discussions and makes individual studio visits. Omi's Visitors Program enables residents to have conversations with many visiting art critics, gallery owners and prominent artists. Direct engagement with the New York City art world is unmatched by similar residency programs. The program culminates with Open Studio Day, during which hundreds of professionals, art lovers, neighbors and friends view work, ask questions and respond. Jasmina Metwaly residency is supported by Adam Mickiewicz Institute. More about Jasmina Metwaly
