Frida Baranek

Frida Baranek, born in 1961 in Brazil, studied architecture at the Universida de Santa Ursula, Rio de Janeiro. She spent 1978-1983 at the Museo de Arte Moderna and the Escola de Artes Visuais in Rio de Janeiro. In 1984 she moved to New York, where she completed her Master’s Degree at Parsons School of Design in 1985. Baranek worked in Sao Paulo, Paris, and Berlin before returning to New York, where she resides today.

Baranek is known mainly for large sculptural works that incorporate varied fibers and industrial scraps. Her works were presented at Aperto 90 at the XLIV Venice Biennale (1990), the Sao Paulo Biennial (1989), as well in group exhibitions: Latin American Artists of the XX Century at The Museum of Modern Art, New York (1993), Lateinamerikanische Kunst at the Ludwig Museum, Koln, Germany. (1993), Metropolis, Berlin (1991), as well as several times at Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM) in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
