Gabriela Morawetz
Gabriela Morawetz is a painter, photographer, and sculptor. She was
born in 1952 in Rzeszow, Poland. In the years 1970-75 she studied at
the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. In 1976 she moved to Venezuela,
and since 1983 she has been living in France.
Morawetz’s works find meaning in the forgotten world of myths. Her art
work has, from the beginning, borne a strong magical aspect. The human
being, the most important figure in her mystical universe, is removed
from any particular time and place and belongs to a world of nature -
one saturated with story-telling, spirituality, and mystery.
To create these worlds,
Morawetz, a native of Poland, transfers photographs of human figures
onto wood or canvas using light -sensitive emulsion. She then paints
over the surface with oil and beeswax. Working like an alchemist,
Morawetz links these complex processes using modern technology to
serve one purpose - to reach the forgotten world of myths as revealed
through pictorial memory.
Her works can be found in
the collections of: the Museo de Bellas Artes in Caracas, Venezuela;
the Cesarea Museum in Israel; and in private collections in Belgium,
Colombia, France, Japan, South Africa and the United States.
