The
17th Annual Chicago Humanities Festival this year takes on a theme
that remains, alas, as daunting and urgent as ever—the interpenetrations
of Peace and War. A huge topic rendered vaster by our
insistence on exploring not only its present incarnation, but its
history and future prospects.
Lawrence
Weschler: The Graphics of Solidarity:
When
Solidarity came surging into history in 1980, Poland's graphic artists
had a remarkable set of long suppressed common symbols and memories
on which to draw as they threw themselves into the struggle. A longtime
chronicler of the Polish passion, Lawrence Weschler (artistic director
of the CHF) offers a slide lecture surveying the history of the vivid
artistic production that ensued.
Lawrence Weschler’s participation is made possible through a significant
gift from board member Marilynn Thoma and Carl
Thoma. Presented in
partnership with Wilbur Wright College.
