- With stunningly beautiful imagery, one of Europe’s finest puppet
theaters brings to life the stories of the legendary Polish-Jewish
writer Bruno Schulz (1892-1942), who is widely regarded
as the finest modern prose stylist in the Polish language,
as well as the significant visual artist. The Last Escape
is the story of a pensioner trapped in his room,
trying to break through his own loneliness and despair by
recalling his past and conjuring up a new world where time
exists on many levels. Schulz,
Poland’s preeminent Jewish writer, has been an inspiration
for such writers as Cynthia Ozick, John Updike, and Philip
Roth.
- The
performances at the Jewish Community Center in New York are
part of a US tour of the Wroclaw Puppet Theatre.
