Polish Cultural Institute,the Bowery Poetry Club, and the Borderland Foundation in Sejny, Poland present: CAFÉ EUROPA an Evening of Arts and Letters on the Theme of “Borderlanders” PART OF BORDERLANDERS: FINDING THEIR VOICE FESTIVAL MONDAY, APRIL 14, 8:00 PM The Bowery Poetry Club Hosted by Krzysztof Czyzewski, president of the Borderland Foundation
Participating authors: Vyt Bakaitis, Carmen Firan, Anna Frajlich, Eva Hoffman, Vasyl Machno Yiddish and Slavic music and songs: Michael Alpert A group of Central and East European poets and writers, now New Yorkers – Romanians, Poles, Ukrainians, Lithuanians, some of them Jewish – will gather for an evening of readings, reminiscences, and reflections on what it means to be a “borderlander” in today’s world. Reading from their work in both English and their own languages, they will share personal stories, songs, and free-flowing discussion with the audience in the atmosphere of a European literary cafe. The legendary Yiddish poet of Lower East Side immigrants and sweatshops, Morris Rosenfeld, born near Sejny, will be remembered, and Mr. Czyzewski will introduce Central Europe in New York, the upcoming English edition of Krasnogruda, Borderland’s quarterly devoted to the culture, history, and ethnic problems of Central and Eastern Europe. Earlier editions will be available for purchase.
BORDERLANDERS: FINDING THEIR VOICE is presented by the Polish Cultural Institute in New York in association with La MaMa E.T.C., Bowery Poetry Club, Millennium Film Workshop, Inc., and the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies, New School for Social Research. All performance events are presented in the Lower East Side as a tribute to the multicultural heritage of a district that was home to many Eastern European immigrants in the early 20th century.
