The Borderland Center’s Film Department. has one of the largest collections of documentaries on Central and Eastern Europe’s national and ethnic groups – ca. 4,500 films. At the Center’s film studio young people working with guidance from professional filmmakers in all stages of production create documentaries on Borderland projects (and its teaching methods) and on the world of the borderlands itself, filming material traces of a bygone era and the stories of older people.

The program is a selection from the Center’s collected as well as self-produced films, in the languages of the borderland, with English subtitles. Each day two or three films are followed by a Q&A with Krzysztof Czyzewski, moderated by Monika Fabijanska, director of the Polish Cultural Institute.

FESTIVAL PROGRAM:

BORDERLANDERS: FINDING THEIR VOICE is presented by the Polish Cultural Institute in New York in association with La MaMa E.T.C., Bowery Poetry Club, Millennium Film Workshop, Inc., and the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies, New School for Social Research. All performance events are presented in the Lower East Side as a tribute to the multicultural heritage of a district that was home to many Eastern European immigrants in the early 20th century.

Special thanks to Professor Elzbieta Matynia of the New School for Social Research for her dedication and creative input.
