The Polish Cultural Institute will be hosting a booth at the Brooklyn Book Festival for the first time this year, featuring an array of new Polish literature in English translation as well as books on Polish cinema, history, music, theater, and visual arts.

Select featured titles will be available for sale with Brooklyn-based booksellers Book Court (booth A) and Spoonbill and Sugartown (booth 80-81). These include: Fado, a remarkable book of peregrinary essays by Andrzej Stasiuk just released by Dalkey Archive; Julia Hartwig's In Praise of the Unfinished and Janusz Szuber's They Carry a Promise, two inspiring volumes of poetry by acknowledged but undertranslated masters, published by Knopf in the past year; and Jerzy Pilch's crapulous romp of a novel The Mighty Angel (Open Letter), together with classics like Milosz and Kapuscinski.

In the afternoon, two informal EVENTS will take place at the PCI booth (79):

3:00 PM - Polish poet and novelist JACEK DEHNEL, currently a writer in residence at Ledig House in upstate New York, will read from his poetry and present his recent anthology: Six Polish Poets (Arc Publications, April 2009).

3:30 PM - Pulitzer Prize winner, former New York Sun editor, and now Kosciuszko Foundation President ALEX STOROZYNSKI will sign copies of his acclaimed biography of Polish patriot and American revolutionary The Peasant Prince: Thaddeus Kosciuszko and the Age of Revolution (St. Martin's Press, April 2009).

The Brooklyn Book Festival, now in its fourth year, is a celebration of books and the written word presented by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, the Brooklyn Literary Council, and Brooklyn Tourism, together with a host of co-sponsors. This year, its abundant events program features readings and discussions with such prominent authors as Breyten Breytenbach, Anne Carson, Edwidge Danticat, Anita Desai, Philip Gourevitch, Naomi Klein, Claire Messud, Oliver Sacks, Colson Whitehead, and many many more.
