Zbigniew Brzezinski shares his views on the importance of building international alliances and how America needs to lead and develop a global community of shared interests in these unstable times. Dr. Brzezinski is with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and is Professor of American Foreign Policy at the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, Washington, D.C. Born in Warsaw in 1928, he was President Carter's National Security Adviser from 1977 to 1981, the year he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his role in the normalization of U.S.-Chinese relations and for his contribution to the human rights and national security policies of the United States. He is a member of the board of directors of numerous institutions, including the National Endowment for Democracy and the Polish-American Enterprise Fund. His many books include The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and Its Geostrategic Imperatives, The Grand Failure: The Birth and Death of Communism in the 20th Century; The Choice: Global Domination or Global Leadership; and Out of Control: Global Turmoil on the Eve of the 20th Century. In 1995, Dr. Brzezinski was awarded the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's highest civilian decoration for his contributions to recovery by Poland of its independence. In 1963 he had already been selected by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as one of America's Ten Outstanding Men.
