WARSAW - LANDSCAPE WITH SINGER
7-part doc. on Isaac Bashevis Singer to mark his July 14 Centennial

Sunday, July 11, 2004 - Sunday, September 5, 2004
Sundays & Mondays

CUNY TV
New York, NY

To commemorate the July 14 centennial of Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904-1991), CUNY-TV and the Polish Cultural Institute are proud to present WARSAW - LANDSCAPE WITH SINGER, an extraordinary series of seven half-hour films that brilliantly evokes a panoramic picture of Polish-Jewish history as seen through the prism of the life and writing of Singer, who won the 1978 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his impassioned narrative art which, with roots in a Polish-Jewish cultural tradition, brings universal human conditions to life." A lifelong writer in Yiddish of masterful novels, short stories, and children's books, I. B. Singer was controversial to some but was and remains a storyteller beloved throughout the world. Though he was still in his very early 30's when he left Poland, the rest of his long life spent in the United States was devoted to preserving the memory of the once-thriving life of the Jewish community in pre-war Poland.

In addition to the series, which will be shown in its entirety on Sunday, July 11, and will be repeated in weekly installments thereafter, CUNY-TV offers a special half-hour introductory conversation between host Jerry Carlson and the series producer Adam Kinaszewski, former Solidarity activist, a graduate in law who (like Frederick Wiseman) turned to documentary filmmaking, and whose recent work includes portraits of Lech Walesa and Jozef Tischner.

Sunday July 11: complete series shown from 1:00 to 5:00 PM

Mondays and Sundays thereafter, one installment shown four times each week:

Mondays: 8:30 AM, 2:30 PM, 8:30 PM

Sundays: July 18 at 8:30 AM, and from July 25 on, at 12:30 PM

CUNY-TV: Cable Ch.75 (Time Warner, Cablevision) & Ch.109 (RCN Manhattan) or check local listings
