BOGUSLAW SCHAEFFER
String Quartet No. 17

Boguslaw Schaeffer's String Quartet No. 17 is in five parts. Part A begins and ends extremely loud and ferocious; a gentle, delicate section in the middle provides contrast. In the final section the four instruments are heard in independent lines in a fast tempo. Part B, as a whole, is quasi-andante, with a mixture of tempos among the instruments that creates the impression of a free improvisation. Part C employs many different textures; microtones impart intense expressiveness. The virtuosic Part D was conceived as a collage of textures. Part E, the finale, uses many different tempos and is longer than the other parts. Its textural combinations gives it a very individual form. [Adapted by Joel Sachs from notes by the composer]
