LIDIA GRYCHTOLOWNA

Her name appears among Berlin Radio?s celebrated cycle of "Masterly Interpretation" and on posters seen in Caracas, Havana, Rome and Palermo. She gave premiere performances of Prokofiev?s Concerto for left hand, both in United Kingdom and Belgium, and in Germany made a recording of a neglected, early concerto by Beethoven for Philips Records. She has given concerts in the USA, Mexico, Australia and Thailand, and since 1980 has sat on the panel of jurors in four consecutive Chopin Competitions in Warsaw, as well as several other Chopin competitions. Since 1980 she has been a professor of piano at the Johannes Gutenberg, University of Mainz. When she recorded the complete Impromptus and Scherzo by Chopin (Polskie Nagrania and DG), the music critic of "Diapason" (No. 152 in 1970) in Paris wrote: "This is an exciting and exemplary recording. Grychtolowna?s vivacious personality a la Martha Archerich has drawn much admiration from her audience. Her appreciation of the subtleties of shading makes it difficult to decide which of her qualities are to be most admired: her dynamic touch, her staccato a la Horowitz, her heartfelt lyricism of her marvelous phrasing. Thanks to her flawless technique she is able to recognize the subtleties of two notes followed by a triplet (the second theme of Chopin's second Scherzo), which most pianists would play as equal tones".
