Wilhelm Dichter was born in Boryslaw, in what is now Ukraine, in 1935 and survived the war as a hidden child. In 1944 his family relocated to Poland. He lived in Poland, completing his doctorate at the Warsaw Polytechnic, specializing in the field of ballistics. In addition to his work at the university, Dichter authored many articles on the subjects of popular science and science fiction in Warsaw newspapers and appeared on various radio and television programs.

He emigrated to the United States with his family during the Communist anti-semitic campaign of 1968, resigning his membership in the Communist Party, leaving most of his possessions and assets behind, and worked in ballistics and eventually as as a computer imaging specialist for Linotype-Hell.

His first book, God's Horse (1996), was nominated for the prestigious Nike Prize, and it was followed by The Atheists' School (1999), which was a Nike finalist, and English Lessons (2010). He lives in the Boston area, and says he is working on a new project, unrelated to the subject of his trilogy.
