Two Polish Guest Artists from Stacja Szamocin Theatre, Luba Zarembinska and Patryk Czaplicki, will be working with students from Willamette University and Guest Actor Michael Griggs on creating an intriguing evening of Polish theatre. The works will be performed in a highly theatrical Eastern European performance style using live actors in combination with puppets or figures.

Two works will be staged: Confession in Wood by Polish playwright, Jan Wilkowski, specially translated for this performance by Mateusz Perkowski, the grandson of the playwright. Confession In Wood is a short play about an old woodcarver who has spent his life trying to depict in his art his devotion and connection to his faith. As he comes to the end of his life, he feels that he has never succeeded in capturing in his sculptures the essence of creation and he tries to come to terms with that failure. In the performance the theatrical magic lies in the conversations that the woodcarver has with his various religious sculptures, which come to life (played by actors.)

Wowra, a companion piece, has been specially adapted by Luba Zarembinska and translated by Patryk Czaplicki and Ida Bocian.

* Please note that on May 14 at 8 PM in the Goldsmith Building, Portland, Luba Zarembinska will be presenting a one-night performance of a collaborative work by the Stacja Szamocin Theatre and Portland's Hand2Mouth Theatre, the beginning of a two-year joint project on the work of Bruno Schulz. The performance, called From a Dream to a Dream, is based on themes from Schulz's story, The Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass.
