Part of Borderlanders: Finding Their Voice Festival

Borderlands will always be areas of struggle, of conflict, or tension. You have to fight to make this struggle a potential for something good. - Krzysztof Czyzewski

A conversation with Krzysztof Czyzewski, Elzbieta Matynia, Associate Professor of Liberal Studies and Sociology, director of the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies, New School for Social Research, and Jeffrey C. Goldfarb, Michael E. Gellert Professor of Sociology, The New School for Social Research.

With the poetry of Czeslaw Milosz as a springboard, the conversation will explore the possibilities offered by the creative work of "orderlanders" ho have experienced life on the crossroads of cultures and religions, and by "ood memories"as a platform for mending fences and opening up spaces for new encounters in an increasingly divided world.

In Sejny the community of many nations, cultures, languages and traditions comprises the beauty of the European heritage. - Adam Michnik, Gazeta Wyborcza

Krzysztof Czyzewski has based his life's work on pushing the limits of borders, whether it involves going beyond the acceptable, bringing the past to the present, or bridging one country or culture with another. - Gail Kimberling, News-Times (Newport, Oregon)

I consider him very humane, extremely open, tolerant, understanding and full of respect for various traditions, denominations and languages. - Czeslaw Milosz

Kzysztof Czyzewski and Bozena Szroeder, director of the Sejny Chronicles theater performance, will also be leading workshops for the Theater Department students of the New School's Eugene Lang College for Liberal Arts.

BORDERLANDERS: FINDING THEIR VOICE is presented by the Polish Cultural Institute in New York in association with La MaMa E.T.C., Bowery Poetry Club, Millennium Film Workshop, Inc., and the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies, New School for Social Research. All performance events are presented in the Lower East Side as a tribute to the multicultural heritage of a district that was home to many Eastern European immigrants in the early 20th century.

Special thanks to Professor Elzbieta Matynia of the New School for Social Research for her dedication and creative input.
