and Playwright Marcin Cecko
Monday, October 24, 2011
Martin E. Segal Theatre Center, CUNY
CUNY Graduate Center
365 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY
The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center, as part of their International/World Theatre Series, will host an evening with director Krzysztof Garbaczewski and playwright/poet/performer Marcin Cecko, who will discuss new currents and directions in Polish theater as well as their own, critically acclaimed work.
Garbaczewski and Cecko constantly challenge theatrical form by playing with narrative, mixing classic with popular culture and utilizing a range of media and artistic practices. Krzysztof Garbaczewski and Marcin Cecko will present excerpts from their recent projects, including Odyssey, which won prizes for directing and stage design at the International Divine Comedy Festival in Krakow last year; The Death Star (Jerzy Szaniawski Theatre in Walbrzych, 2010) inspired by Star Wars; and The Sexual Life of Savages (Nowy Teatr in Warsaw, 2011) based on the works of anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski.
Ivan Talijanic of WaxFactory in New York will direct a reading in English of a fragment from The Sexual Life of Savages - an engaging dramatic essay on the search and role of a "Savage" in contemporary "civilized" world.
A media reading directed by Ivan Talijancic*
Performers: Erika Latta* (Malinowski), Gillian Chadsey (Witkacy + Half-Savage-Half-Animal), Masha Yakovenko (Outsider), Melody Bates (Leader)
Sound editing: Erika Latta*
Make up: Kristen Paynter
