New York Polish Film Festival
honors stage and screen legend

RETROSPECTIVE OF FILMS

Thursday, May 5, 2005 - Wednesday, May 11, 2005
Opening night gala: Thur., May 5

Directors Guild Theatre, Anthology Film Archives
New York, NY

Polish legend of stage and screen, Elzbieta Czyzewska, is being honored in person with a special tribute at the Opening Night Gala of the week-long New York Polish Film Festival. Offering many outstanding new feature films in their New York premieres, the Festival includes - for the first time ever in the U.S. - a restrospective of Elzbieta Czyzewska's work in film. The Opening Night Gala at the Directors Guild Theatre, featuring, among other attractions, a new film by Agnieszka Holland, also launches the Czyzewska Retrospective with two student shorts from the 1950s as a curtain-raiser.

The Elzbieta Czyzewska Retrospective, continuing at Anthology Film Archives May 6-11, includes seven of her many important and popular films, namely those available with English subtitles - films by such distinguished directors as Andrzej Wajda, Wojciech Has, Jerzy Skolimowski, and Janusz Nasfeter - including Unloved, Where is the General?, Wajda's Everything for Sale, and the cult classic Saragossa Manuscript. Student etudes made with Czyzewska at the Lodz Film School in the 1950s and never before shown publicly will also be premiered. A special gem is Agnieszka Osiecka's impressionistic documentary STS 58, about a student theater Czyzewska performed in.

Ms. Czyzewska will be present for discussion following the screenings.

The Opening Night Gala on Thursday evening May 5 will also be an "Oscar-nominee" celebration, with the new film Julia Walking Home (The Healer), directed by Oscar-nominee Agnieszka Holland, and this year's powerful short-documentary Oscar nominee, The Children of Leningradsky, by Hanna Polak and Andrzej Celinski, as well as the short film Fallen Art, by Oscar-nominated director Tomasz Baginski.
