Celebrating life and work of the Polish composer

I have a strong desire to communicate something, through my music, to the people. I am not working to get many "fans" for myself; I do not want to convince, I want to find. I would like to find people who in the depths of their souls feel the same way as I do. That can only be achieved through the greatest artistic sincerity in every detail of music, from the minutest technical aspects to the most secret depths. I know that this standpoint deprives me of many potential listeners, but those who remain mean an immeasurable treasure for me. [...] I regard creative activity as a kind of soul-fishing, and the "catch" is the best medicine for loneliness, that most human of sufferings. - Witold Lutoslawski

On December 7, 2012, the Parliament of Poland adopted a resolution declaring 2013 the Year of Witold Lutoslawski, in recognition of special importance of his work for national and world heritage: "On the hundredth anniversary of the birth of the composer Witold Lutoslawski, the Polish Parliament is paying homage to one of the greatest artists of our time, who made a lasting and important contribution to Polish and international music of the Twentieth Century."

Witold Lutoslawski (1913-94), one of the greatest musical minds of his era, elevated Polish concert music to world's highest standards. For more than sixty years, his unique compositions have been entrancing listeners in all major concert halls throughout the world, exploring new kinds of beauty and revealing previously unknown possibilities of understanding and experience of the modern world. Continuing the great European tradition from Beethoven, Debussy, Chopin and Bartók, Lutoslawski was a citizen of the musical world, while publicly proclaiming his patriotism and strong connection to Polsih music and culture.

A number of events celebrating this great occassion will be held througout the year - check the link below for details.

One of major releases planned for the Lutoslawski centennial is a 2-CD set by the Los Angeles Philharmonic - an orchestra Lutoslawski became closely associated with in the last decade of his life - led by Esa-Pekka Salonen, a fervid devotee and mentee of Lutoslawski, on Sony Classical. The box (also available as digital dowload) contains the four symhonies by the Polish composer.

The recordings of Lutoslawski's Fanfare for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Symphony No. 1 have beeen underwritten by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, as part of Polska Music program.
