Reading tour and residency at Writers OMI
Friday, September 27, 2013 - Sunday, November 3, 2013
Detailed tour schedule
In between the ebb of thoughts and the flow
of sleep I have a minute of eternity for gathering
But before I can bend to pick up the first
one, a wave washes over me and the turbulent deep engulfs me. Some
time later I wake up, because the sun
is sticking its fingers in my eyes. I don't remember much.
In my right pocket I've a pebble, in my left a jellyfish,
in my mouth--sand.
--Tadeusz Dabrowski, from Black Square (tr. Antonia Lloyd-Jones, Zephyr Press, 2011)
The poetry of Tadeusz Dabrowski (b. 1979) is a study in the constant struggle with uncertainty, in the contrasts between religion and eros, between dead seriousness and humor through play with form. Nominated for the NIKE prize in 2010, translated into approximately twenty languages, Dabrowski is one of the most celebrated Polish poets of his generation. He will be in the US for a four-week residency at Writers OMI at Ledig House in Ghent, New York, following a healthy stream of Polish writers-in-residence--among them Olga Tokarczuk, Agata Tuszynska, Dorota Maslowska, Jacek Dehnel, and graphic novelist Marzena Sowa.
His poetry has been translated into English by two-time Found in Translation award winner, Antonia Lloyd-Jones, in the collection, Black Square from Zephyr Press.
At the end of September through early November, before and after his residency at Writers OMI, Dabrowski will have a reading tour with events at some of the best poetry venues in the Northeastern United States, at Columbia University, Del Rossi's Trattoria in Dublin, New Hampshire; Grolier Bookshop in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Atomic Books in Baltimore; Politics and Prose Bookstore in Washington, DC; in Philadelphia; and at the Cornelia Street Café and KGB in New York. He will be joined along the way by such distinguished poets as Mary Jo Salter, Tom Christensen, John Hennessy, Joshua Weiner, Vasyl Makhno, Andrei Gritsman, Timothy Donnelly, Martin Woodside, Daisy Fried, and others.
Tadeusz Dabrowski's tour is organized by Zephyr Press, the OMI International Arts Center, and the Polish Cultural Institute New York, with support from the City of Gdansk.
