A friend and a great artist
We are deeply saddened at the loss of Wojciech Krukowski, a long-time director of the Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, as well as founder and director of Polish art collective Akademia Ruchu (The Academy of Movement). Mr. Krukowski died Saturday, January 18, 2014. He was 69 years old.
For almost forty years, under Mr. Krukowski's direction, Akademia Ruchu has engaged in insightful reflection on Communist and post-Communist Poland, and presented hundreds of performance art interventions, theater performances, and political actions. In November 2013, we welcomed Mr. Krukowski and Akademia Ruchu in New York for the Performa Biennial, during which the collective presented a series of performances, including thought-provoking public interventions in the heart of Times Square, inviting all spectators to become part of the piece.
It is sad to think now that our Times Square adventure with Mr. Krukowski was the last time we would see him. The world has lost an extraordinary man. We are certain, however, that his legacy will live on.
