Lecture by Dorota Juszczak and Izabela Zychowicz, Royal Lazienki Museum in Warsaw
Thursday, November 21, 2019
The Royal Lazienki, King Stanislaw August’s summer residence, is a wonderful place where a classicist architecture is harmoniously blended with its natural surroundings featuring fabulous gardens. Palace on the Isle, the beloved private residence of the last king of Poland, housed the most precious works of art from the royal collection.
The jewels of the collection were displayed during the king’s reign in the Picture Gallery at the Lazienki palace. Many are still there, but a big part of the collection was sold after the death of Stanislaw August (1798) by his heirs. This paintings are now to be found among the most prominent collections in Europe – eg. Wallace Collection, London or Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam but also in the United States: the famous Polish Rider by Rembrandt can be admired in New York, the Frick Collection.
Today the Royal Lazienki, one of the most beautiful eighteenth century royal residences in Europe, is also a great modern museum, full of activity and ideas.
Ms. Izabela Zychowicz, Deputy Director of the Royal Lazienki Museum, will present you the history of the Royal Lazienki and the king’s ideas regarding the character of this beautiful villa. Ms. Dorota Juszczak, curator of paintings, will focus on the Stanislaw August’s vast collection of paintings.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
