The company that brought the much acclaimed production of Slawomir Mrozek's Striptease & Out at Sea to La MaMa last January has more to offer from this great playwright! This summer Paul Bargetto directs Mrozek's satire Philosopher Fox.
Presented as part of the Malta International Theater Festival, the show won high praise and delighted audiences.
Following the "flying theater" style of its premiere in Poland, East River Commedia will bring Mrozek's biting wit outdoors, to New York City parks and streets.
In the play, a "Fox" confesses his problems with meaning and conscience to a resolutely silent Bishop. Tortured by his "carnivorous nature," the Fox uses all his guile to pry an Answer from the recalcitrant Bishop. A "Cock," one of Fox's victims, also makes a hilarious appearance.
The play will open in Central Park in the shadow of Shakespeare in the Park's Delacorte Theater. In late August, East River Commedia will continue to present Fox on the fly at random locations in the city (visit www.eastriver.org for details).
In this political season, Philosopher Fox is a welcome skewering of both the pious and the profane.
Starring: Troy Lavallee as Fox, Dave Mawhinney as the Bishop, and Tuomas Hiltunen as the Cock. Amiel Melnick dramaturgs. Costumes by Oana Ban, sets and props by Mimi Lien.
