Marcin Maciejowski, Mass, oil on canvas, 2005, 40x50cm

"I live here and I feel good here" was the title of Marcin Maciejowski's weekly cartoon for "Przekr├│j" Magazine - a news and culture journal. This statement may be treated both as Marcin's private motto as well as his artistic agenda. His paintings and cartoons provide an exceptional documentation of the Polish mentality in the block-of-flats-tough-guys era. Maciejowski's attitude to work is reminiscent of the realists from the 19th century. He is being very straightforward and tries to depict what he sees - fragments of reality, resembling a TV opera, based on basic feelings and gestures; the reality which often comes close to tabloid headlines and TV thrillers. He paints a picture of a stereotypical Pole's life, in which love, sex, sport, military service, accidents, gossips play crucial roles. The Poles' existence, as shown by Maciejowski, seems picturesque. The women try to look beautiful and sexy, and the men want to be perceived as strong and tough. Maciejowski's painting is less of a social critique than a search for identity. Each one of the anonymous crowd or faces searches for it. These paintings and cartoons make us see things differently and take a closer look at what seemed to us to be simply artificial, cheap or banal. Maciejowski's painting does not contain much cynicism, but it is painting with character.

Marcin Maciejowski, born in 1974, graduated from the Graphic Art Department at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts (2001). Co-founder and member of Ladnie Group (1995-2001). Marcin Maciejowski's work is currently in "Superstars" at the Kunsthalle Wien and has appeared in "Nation," at the Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt am Main, Art Basel 35 Statements, and the National Center for Contemporary Art in Moscow. He has had solo exhibitions at galleries such as Galerie Meyer Kainer, Vienna and Marc Foxx Gallery in Los Angeles. This is his first solo exhibition in New York City. Marcin Maciejowski lives and works in Krakow, Poland.
