Robert Kusmirowski, The Museum of the Last Artwork, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA, 2005

One of Poland’s most fascinating emerging artists, Robert Kusmirowski offers expert “falsifications” of everyday things - from vintage photos to railway cars — and sometimes even entire situations, asking us to question concepts of history, illusion, transformation and fantasy that are key themes in the life of his country  - as it undergoes tremendous change. Known for his ability to create uncannily accurate 3D forgeries of objects and spaces, he has throughout his short career been exhibited in galleries, museums and arts festivals across Europe. For his first solo exhibition in the United States, the Yerba Buena Center commissioned a new site-specific installation by Kusmirowski that spotlights his ingenious approach to the imitation and manipulation of time and space.

“…perfect pencil copies of faded and tattered old photographs, ancient invitation cards and other sentimental ephemera by Robert Kusmirowski. I know nothing about this artist, but was instantly captivated and intrigued.”                          – Adrian Searle, The Guardian, 2004

Conceived and produced in partnership with the Artist-in-Residence Program of the Headlands Center for the Arts, this project has been generously supported by the Trust for Mutual Understanding, the National Centre for Culture, Poland, and the Polish Cultural Institute, New York, and organized in cooperation with A-I-R at the Centre for Contemporary Art “Ujazdowski Castle”, Warsaw, Poland, as part of the POLAND-U.S. ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE EXCHANGE PROGRAM
